Dorset Wedding Photographer - whats in the bag?

By greg - Posted on 04 May 2009

I often get asked by people (be it keen amateurs at a wedding, or other photographers) what do you use for weddings, how much kit do i need to start and that sort of thing, so I've put together this little post for those interested in the technical side of things.

So be warned if you don't care what kit i use, or this will just plain send you off to sleep then skip this article and come back when i'm putting some more great photos online!

The short answer is of course that it doesn't really matter as long as the kit is up to the job, the advantage of the pro bodies is more in having 2 memory cards (not all have this) - and the advantage of the fast primes is their ability to shoot in lower light conditions and give me the ability to control the depth of field to a much higher degree than is possible with any zoom lens.

Moving onto the flashguns, i always try to use these as little as possible as i think they take away from the natural ambience, and also mean i need to work with an assistant (and more slowly). This said I have been shooting a lot more strobe work (see all my posts on my blog about using off camera flash) - this allows me to offer some amazing images, even when with natural light this just wouldn't be possible - you really can get some romantic and amazing images by the creative use of flash. If you're interested in reading more take a look at Strobist and also look out for some upcoming podcasts......

Well that's a quick overview of what's in my bag, if you have any other questions you'd like to ask me or just want to say "hi" - then drop me a line, or leave a comment below.

For the interested few here's an actual photo of my kit balanced on my old desk with my old monitors... bye for now.
